Review of No Time For Second Thoughts – Megan Egglestone By Debra Murphy

With a subject that should bring fear to everyone, this book is about DNA changing the world and the cloning of humans.

There is a strange mix of characters, from the two main stars wanting to clone humans, to the women allowing this to happen to them.

Droshky and Janson are very different people, creating an ongoing tension between them. There is always that debate as to the plan’s aim. Was it to work towards a better humankind, a world where men are no longer needed, or was it simply a question of power?

Then there is the added anguish Alexis feels being the first woman pregnant with a cloned baby. But this was what her late husband, Rex, was determined would help Alexis after his death.

True facts, such as the first test-tube baby, Louise Brown, make you believe this story is reality. Then you are drawn further into this idea with the talk of Samuel Clemens and his Angelfish. The book reads like an official documentary, giving the feeling that this happened.

Throughout the story, there is always a conflict between ethics and religion. You can feel the growing torment in Alexis as her pregnancy progresses.

But the big question on everyone’s mind was, should every woman be entitled to have a baby at any cost? Or was this a complex ambition following on from the Nazis all those years ago?

Did I enjoy the book? Yes, and no. I found it difficult to feel any warmth from any of the characters. The story is told almost as a narrative without adding enough emotion to the text.

The book left me worrying that this is something that might well happen in the future. It frightens me to think these changes could be happening somewhere in the world. Maybe there is already a Woomera, and cloning is about to become the norm.
